Massachusetts Title 5 Septic

Most homeowners with septic systems don’t learn about Massachusetts Title 5 Septic regulations until they decide to sell their home.  These regulations were put into effect in 1978 and have been updated several times. Title 5 regulates all aspects of a septic system including its size, excavating, and the type of components used. Their purpose is to prevent untreated sewerage from entering ground water ways to stop the pollution of rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, and coastal waters.  A properly functioning septic system allows microbes to break down the solids before the effluent travels down through the soil and reaches the water table.
